ADDING AN ADDITIONAL PARALLEL PORT(S):
If you need to add additional PCI parallel ports
because:
1.
Other station accessories need a parallel port
or:
2.
Run two (or more) WN-1 systems on
a single computer, with all running simultaneously.
or:
3.
Your computer did not come with a parallel port.
Then here is a step-by-step solution.
A: CAUTION:
This will ONLY work with WN-1 software revision 2.0 or later. This example shows installation for the
parallel card
manufactured by LAVA.
These cards are Plug-n-Play on XP and XPpro operating systems, and will
work with the driver
supplied on 95/98 and ME systems. There are dozens of parallel port card
manufacturers, and any of them should work,
but we can't try them all.
The LAVA card is one that we have successfully used in our systems.
Any parallel port card that can run
SPP or ECP parallel port mode should
work. Check the Wavenode
"Links" page for
information on where to find the LAVA card, they run
between $20 and $35.
B: Install the card and go to the device
manager. You should observe that the new
parallel port has been reported under the
Ports section. Figure #1 below shows the LAVA card being
found by the operating system.
C: Go to the "Properties \Resources"
for your new parallel port and note the I/O range addresses being used. In Figure #2 it is shown
as
E800-E807. This will vary for different parallel port
cards and may change if you add more peripherals to your computer.
The starting address, E800 in this case, is the one you will need to remember.
D. Go to the WN-1 software and open the
configuration file. At the port
selection section at the bottom-right of the screen, click on
"User Sel" and enter the starting address in the box
provided. See figure 4. Now click the "Save" and "Close"
button.
Your software is now configured to use this port. Plug the WN-1 cable into your new parallel
port. If
the front panel Interface
LED is flashing, you are ready to go.
You can repeat this procedure for as many parallel ports as you
need.
E. NOTE: If you wish to run two or more WN-1
systems on your computer simultaneously, you will have to install the software
in a unique folder for each WN-1. Then add a shortcut to your desktop for each
copy. The reason: you will want a unique .ini
file for each copy of the software in
order to personalize each screen separately for meter titles and meter
scales. The .ini file
saves these screen settings for you, and is located in the same folder as
the WN-1.exe file. Therefore, with
each WN-1 running
its own software, each will have it's own settings saved in it's .ini
file.
In this manner, you can install as
many WN-1 systems on a single computer
as you like and observe them all at the same time.

Figure
4 shows the configuration menu with the "User Sel." button clicked
and E800 selected as the Parallel Port
Address.
Remember: This Port address will change for different computers
and parallel port cards. Use the
"System Resources" menu of
your Operating System to
find the port address for your computer.
